Julie Hamano

My name is Julie Hamano. I am a highly driven individual with a talent and passion for goal-oriented solutions and I specialize in taking on tasks head on. I am a Founding Partner of Ikigai Travel and currently hold the position of Senior Brand Manager.

I run on coffee, my favorite food is anything spicy, and I have a deep-rooted love for bringing my adventures to life through the lens of a camera.

My mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother’s words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers — so many caring people in this world.”

Ikigai Travel started as the brainchild of my boyfriend and me as a way to take back the spotlight from the "negative news" media that reigns supreme today and instead bring back the focus to the good deeds that happen around the world on a daily basis. In the modern world of instant messaging, live streams, and by-the-minute news updates, our desire for new, exciting, "hot" content and stories has reached unfathomable levels. This has led to a media culture wherein stories of triumph over hardship or good deeds are put on the back burner to make way for stories of scandal, drama, or conflict since it is these stories that create the most clicks, shares, buzz, and hype.

As can be seen in numerous instances in recent history such as The United Incident and the mainstream media's initial coverage of Dr. Dao to create tabloid-style pieces about details of his past (information which is irrelevant to the matter at hand regardless of its accuracy or lack thereof,) or with the Syrian Refugee Crisis where deadly attacks take place on an almost daily basis all across the region but the mainstream media in the United States remains silent to instead discuss the latest celebrity dramas we are fast approaching a day and age wherein we all are jaded and undisturbed by atrocities both in our backyard and abroad but we are up in arms about the most trivial things.

Ikigai Travel was founded with the vision that we can create a world where each individual can critically analyze media across a variety of channels to formulate their own, honest opinions and then articulate these thoughts to others to nurture greater understanding for both parties. Ikigai Travel's mission is to take back the focus from the trivial negativity of most "news" today and instead place the spotlight on nonprofits or charitable organizations around the world that are having a positive impact in their communities today. One way we aim to achieve this is through our upcoming monthly series, Spotlight.
